The Íris butter dish is a tribute to a long-gone restaurant of the same name, known for its unforgettable atmosphere. The design was born out of the desire to recreate the restaurant's unique butter dish, which was nowhere to be found after its closure. The original piece was a simple cylinder with holes on top through which the butter oozed. The designer's love for this unique presentation of butter led to the creation of Íris.
What sets Íris apart from other butter dishes is its unique presentation and operation. A piece of butter is placed on top of the cylinder and gently pressed with the cap, which has a flower cut. This action creates a butter flower, ready for serving, adding a touch of elegance and surprise to any meal.
The Íris butter dish is crafted from stainless steel 316, water and laser-cut, and laser welded. Each piece is assembled and polished by hand, ensuring a high-quality finish. The dish measures 125 mm in diameter and 35 mm in height, making it a compact yet stylish addition to any table setting.
The design process for Íris was not without its challenges. From understanding the materials and techniques involved to controlling the cost of the piece and considering its marketing and packaging, every aspect required careful consideration. Despite these challenges, Íris was successfully launched and even won the first prize at POPs 2014, held at the Serralves Museum in Oporto, Portugal.
In recognition of its innovative design and impact on tableware, Íris was awarded the Golden A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
João Faria Concept's Íris is more than just a butter dish; it's a piece of art that adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any meal. It's a testament to the designer's creativity and commitment to delivering unique, high-quality products that redefine the dining experience.
